The Courtland Lodge Annual Sports Day
Courtland Lodge, our care home in Watford, recently held a sports day at the home which is an annual competition that sees two teams competing in a number of outdoor challenges held in the home’s gardens. This time the staff team at Courtland Lodge threw down the gauntlet to colleagues at Head Office who are based in Welwyn Garden City, a challenge that was accepted eagerly.
In preparation for the day both teams practiced their own challenge songs which they would perform at the start of the competition to entertain their rivals and the residents who were keen for the day to arrive.
The weather hadn’t exactly been promising the days before the event but the clouds parted and the morning sun shone down on the home’s gardens as the Head Office team arrived. After early morning refreshments both teams assembled, performed their challenge songs and the games began.
The support for both teams was lively and the gardens were full of residents and their families and friends. Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson, Chairwoman of Watford Borough Council, also came to cheer on the teams and to chat with residents and staff at the home.
The games were wide and varied and included many favourites such as the tug of war, various relay races and a sack race which, to the delight of the cheering crowd, saw a number of tumbles.
Both teams took a break from the competition to share an outdoor lunch with everyone after which a hamburger eating competition was held, which came as a surprise to the competing individuals who had just wolfed down a large buffet meal.
The staff team at Courtland Lodge emerged as the victors by some considerable margin and the day ended with an award ceremony where Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson presented participants with medals.
This was a fabulous day that was full of laughter and one that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone there.
