Garden City Court Chef Reaches Final of National Vegetarian Awards

This year marks the sixth anniversary of the Vegetarian for Life Awards for Excellence in Vegetarian and Vegan Care Catering. With more vegetarians and vegans moving into care homes each year, these awards aim to recognise care home catering teams and individuals who are pioneering the way within modern care home settings.

Garden City Court, Quantum Care’s home in Letchworth, are no strangers to the Vegetarian for Life charity, which works on behalf of older vegans and vegetarians. In a previous VfL competition the home topped their category by creating a magnificent soya based curry with black lentils and potato croquettes and this year they’ve made it as finalists in the awards again.

The home’s Chef Manager, Satpal Kambo (second from right), has been nominated in the Most Innovative Veggie Dish category for her take on Dhokla, a dish native to the Indian state of Gujarat, served with a mint chutney and finished off with a mango mousse.

Our heartfelt congratulations go out to Satpal for her well deserved finalist nomination and wish her the best of luck at the awards ceremony which will held in the Jubilee Room at the Houses of Parliament on the 23rd November.

It’s not just about awards though; there are practical reasons why care homes need to be aware of the increasing need to provide for vegetarian and vegan diets. The surveys carried out by the VfL charity have shown that the number of vegans in residential care has increased by a whopping 167% since 2014.

We’re grateful at Quantum Care for all the wonderful catering teams that work within our homes, providing such a diverse range of meals for our residents. After all, food isn’t only vital to physical and mental wellbeing, it’s also one of the greatest pleasures in life.
