The Grand Opening of the New Raised Bed
Thursday 14th May saw the culmination of a project that had an ex-bricklayer resident indulging his passion for bricks and mortar in memory of a pair of residents who passed away, and for the continuing enjoyment of the rest of the home. The couple, one of whom lived with Dementia, the other with Parkinson’s, were both keen gardeners and were well known for their award winning Tomatoes. When they passed away the family donated money to the home in thanks and to commemorate them, but didn’t want just another plaque on just another bench. The generous donation was used to purchase tools and materials to double the size of the existing allotment with a second raised bed, dedicated to the couple; built by another resident. Children from the local schools Gardening Club were invited to ‘meet’ the couple through old and new photographs and life stories and as soon as the bed was opened they dived in and planted it up with Tomatoes. The children will continue to visit the allotment regularly making use of residents gardening wisdom and adding a bit of oomph with the maintenance, while residents also visit the school to assist with their animals. This exchange is known as ‘The Farm’.
