Happy 107th Birthday to Mary!

On Thursday 13th July 2017, Mary Bullard was joined by her family, friends and staff from Quantum Care at Providence Court care home in Baldock to celebrate her 107th birthday.

Mary was born in The Crown public house in Shillington on 13th July 1910, where her father ran the pub with the help of Mary’s mother; he was also a local farmer during this time. Mary remained in Shillington where she met her late husband Frederick, and they had a son together called Maurice in 1947, it was after this time that the three of them left the pub in Shillington and moved to Hitchin to continue their happy life together. Mary’s son Maurice married Linda and they extended the Bullard family much to Mary’s delight when they had three beautiful daughters, which went on to give Mary seven great grandchildren. Mary’s husband Fred sadly passed away in 1993.

Mary continued to keep up her interests in gardening and flower arranging, as well as being a regular visitor to St Faith’s church in Hitchin up until she became ill at the 95 years of age, at which time she went to stay at Providence Court in Baldock for some planned respite care. It was then decided that in was in Mary’s best interest that she would stay at Providence Court. Mary has regular visits from her son Maurice and daughter-in-law Linda, and grandchildren with their spouses and the great grandchildren. It is undoubtedly her most enjoyable time seeing the children. Many of the residents at Providence Court enjoy the Bullard family visits and have also made good friends.

One time Mary’s son Maurice arranged for an Elvis impersonator to come to the home to entertain all the residents which went down a treat. When we asked Mary’s son Maurice what he thought the main factors were too his mother’s long lasting life he replied; “It is undoubtedly the care that my mother has received from Quantum Care staff in the ten years that she has lived at Providence Court. There have been times where she has fallen ill and we didn’t think she would make it through but she has always been cared for so well and brought back to health, we call her the Duracell Bunny”.
